The ECHL announced today that Gladiators defenseman Jon Awe has been named the ECHL Player of the Week for February 27th through March 5th.

Awe, a defenseman, had 6 points for the Gladiators last week helping Gwinnett go 4-0-0 to improve to 39-11-7 and 85 points while becoming the first team in the ECHL's American Conference to clinch a Kelly Cup Playoff Berth.

Awe began the week posting two goals for the Gladiators in a 3-2 win over Pensacola on February 28th. He then recorded his first professional hat trick, including two power play goals, in the Gladiators 6-3 win over the Ice Pilots on March 4th.

The Memphis, Tennessee native currently leads Gladiators defensemen in power play goals with six while he has posted 9 goals and 9 assists this season for 18 points in 34 games with the Gladiators. Awe has also appeared in 17 AHL games this season with Portland and in one game with Providence. Awe spent four seasons at Northeastern University where he scored 32 points in 111 games and helped the Huskies to the Beanpot Tournament finals in 2002 and 2005.

Awe becomes the fifth ECHL Player of the Week winner from the Gladiators this season tying the ECHL record for most player of the week winners from one team in one year. Gwinnett ties the mark of 5 set by the Louisiana Ice Gators during the 1999-2000 season.

The Gwinnett Gladiators continue the 2005-06 ECHL season on the road on Friday, March 10th as they travel to Charlotte to take on the Checkers at the 7:05 p.m. The Gladiators offer several ticket packages for different needs as well as group outings, suites and birthday parties.
