Gibson's Second Shutout Lifts Norfolk to 3-0 Victory at Albany

ALBANY, NY - Just hours after being named the CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month for October, John Gibson made 34 saves to lead the Norfolk Admirals to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Albany Devils at Times Union Center Friday evening. The shutout was Gibson's second of the season.
Despite a strong showing by the Devils in the game's first five minutes, it was the Admirals that lit the lamp first. Moments after winning an offensive zone faceoff, Norfolk worked the puck up high to Nolan Yonkman. Yonkman hurled a shot from the point which was tipped and redirected into the net for the goal by forward Jamie MacQueen. MacQueen's first goal of the season gave Norfolk the 1-0 lead at 12:22.
Two minutes later, the Admirals added to their lead thanks in part to a nice play by Max Friberg. Friberg won a battle for the puck deep in the Albany end, and feathered a perfect pass from the corner to Max Sauve at the top of the crease. Sauve immediately batted the puck into the net past Devils netminder Scott Wedgewood to give Norfolk a two-goal advantage. The Admirals took the 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Norfolk continued its solid play in the second period. Rookie Antoine Laganiere carried the puck to the right wing circle and flipped a shot on goal that was initially stopped by Wedgewood. However, the rebound bounced behind the Albany goaltender, and Steven Whitney picked up the loose puck and shoved it into the open net to extend the Norfolk lead to 3-0.
The goal spelled the end of the night for Wedgewood who exited the game allowing three goals on 12 shots. Maxime Clermont came in relief for the remainder of the game. The Admirals took the three-goal cushion into the second break.
Despite outshooting the Admirals 12-5 in the final frame, the Devils could not find an answer to beat Norfolk goaltender John Gibson. Gibson was in control throughout the entire game and secured the shutout victory for the Admirals stopping all 34 shots faced.
Wedgewood suffers the loss allowing all three goals, while Clermont turned aside all nine shots faced in a relief effort. Norfolk improves to 6-2-0-2 (14pts) on the season, while Albany falls to 5-4-0-1 (11 pts).
