Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - A key save from Jeff Deslauriers set up Brendan Mikkelson's power play goal with 24.7 seconds left in overtime as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defeated the Hershey Bears by a score of 3-2 at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on Saturday night.
With the score tied at two in the extra session, the Penguins were awarded a power play after Nicolas Deschamps was whistled for goaltender interference. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's man-advantage initially gave the Bears the best opportunity when Matt Watkins was hooked during a shorthanded breakaway.
The play resulted in a penalty shot for Watkins, but a sprawling, blocker save by Deslauriers kept the Penguins alive in the overtime period.
Using their remaining time on the power play, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton got the game-winner when Mikkelson received a pass from Nick Drazenovic in the slot and was able to drive the snap shot past Bears goalie Philipp Grubauer.
Hershey was the first to get on the scoreboard at 13:13 during a two-man advantage. Jamie Johnson had his first shot stopped by Deslauriers, but Derek Whitmore was able to send the rebound to the back of the net.
Three minutes later, the Penguins pulled even on a power play goal of their own. Grubauer turned aside Tom Kostopoulos' chance in the slot, and it was Dominik Uher sweeping the loose puck through the pads of the goalie for his third goal of the season.
In the second, it was the Bears going on top once again, at 11:41 of the period. Breaking into the zone on a 2-on-1, Nathan Walker dished a cross-ice feed right to Dane Byers, who skated in and backhanded the puck past Deslauriers to give Hershey the 2-1 edge.
After the rest of the second period went scoreless, the scoring resumed at 7:04 of the third. Drazenovic won a faceoff in the Hershey zone and it was a waiting Tom Kostopoulos who drove home the one-timer to knot the game, 2-2.
Deslauriers made 22-of-24 to raise his record to 6-0-1 on the season. Drazenovic collected three assists on the night. Kostopoulos posted a goal and two helpers, including the 300th assist of his pro career.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will complete the second half of their home-and-home series with the Hershey Bears tomorrow night at GIANT Center. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM, tune into the Sports Hub 102.
