Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Jeff Flagg had three hits and drove in six runs, but the Gateway Grizzlies pounded out 15 hits as Gateway took the series finale against Traverse City by a 10-6 final.
The Grizzlies got on the board in the first inning as back-to-back bunt singles put runners on first and second before a throwing error allowed Jonathan Johnson to score and moved Chris McClendon to third. Landon Hernandez came up two batters later and hit recorded an infield single to plate McClendon. Rogelio Noris stood in next and hit a two-run homer to put the Grizzlies up 4-0. Gateway would tack on a run in the second on a pair of doubles from Johnson and McClendon to make it 5-0.
Traverse City got their offense going in the fourth as Brian Heere and Jose Vargas led off the inning with singles. Two batters later, Flagg came up and launched his 20th homer of the season to left, a three-run blast making it 5-3.
Things would stay that way until the sixth inning when Noris and John Shelby each went deep for Gateway to make it 7-3.
The Beach Bums weren't done yet as with one out in the seventh, Ryan Still and Heere walked in front of an infield single by Vargas to load the bases. Again two batters later Flagg went to the plate and again he delivered, driving a ball that bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double to bring home Still and Heere, slicing the Grizzlies lead to 7-5.
TC had a chance in the eighth to close the gap even further, but Sean Gusrang on third after a triple, but a sharply hit ball by Still was corralled on a diving stop by Alex Guthrie to close the inning. Gateway would then tack on three more in the ninth, two on Noris' third homer of the night to go up 10-5.
In one final attempt to rally, the Beach Bums scored a run in the ninth as a Heere walk was followed by a Flagg triple off the wall in right to make it 10-6, but Richard Barrett was able to record the final out to end the game.
The win went to Tim Brown (12-2). Bennett Whitmore suffered the loss for Traverse City. Offensively in addition to Flagg's big day, Vargas and Gusrang had three hits each while Heere was on base four times with a single and three walks.
