River City Rascals News Release
O'Fallon, Mo. - Trailing 3-0 after the top of the seventh, River City's offense got it going, scoring a run in the bottom half before Zach Deutscher tied the game in the eight with a two run homerun and Jeremy Synan drove home two with a single to give the Rascals a 5-3 lead they would not give up, despite some struggles in the ninth.
Rascal starter Tony Marsala did not earn a decision after lasting into the seventh. The Otters (45-47) took a 1-0 lead in the third but River City (44-48) hit into three double plays in the first four inning, wasting leadoff singles in each frame.
Marsala was chased from the game after allowing a two-run homer in the seventh before River City got a run on the board in the bottom half. Synan doubled to start the inning and one batter later scored on a groundout to close the gap to 3-1.
Nick Kennedy (5-4) handled the eighth before Matt Serna drew a walk to start the ninth. After failing to get a sacrifice bunt down, Deutscher drove a 2-2 pitch to right-center to tie the game at three. Doug Sanders was hit by a pitch with one out to chase Evansville starter Wynn Pelzer (1-4) before Patton doubled off the Big Dog Wall. Synan singled through the drawn-in infield scoring two to give River City their first lead at 5-3.
Evansville battled in the ninth, scoring a run before running into an out at third base after Charlie Lisk and Matt Serna connected on a tag play following an errant throw. After reliever Albert Ayala intentionally walked the bases loaded, Justin Gill struckout the final batter of the night to earn the save in a 5-4 victory.
The Rascals will try to play playoff spoiler as they host the Windy City ThunderBolts on Friday with first pitch set for 7:05.
