Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (35-56) @ WASHINGTON WILD THINGS (41-51)

Thursday, August 30 - 6:05 p.m. CT

CONSOL Energy Park - Washington, PA

Game #92 - Road Game #45 (35-56), (17-27)

RHP #27 Matt Sommo (2-5, 5.81 ERA) vs. RHP #7 Chris Smith (8-6, 2.97 ERA)

Last time out...

The Joliet Slammers (35-56) were shutout by the Washington Wild Things (41-51) 3-0 Wednesday night. Tommy Mendoza (4-7) got the start for Joliet and went six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out five as he took the loss for the Slammers. Washington got on the board in the fourth on a Jovan Rosa two-run home run to left. They'd add another run in the sixth as a run crossed the plate on a Kyle Zimmerman error. Abel Nieves had a single, double and a triple in the game but fell just short of the cycle. Meanwhile Joliet got runners on base in every inning in the seventh. The problem for the Slammers was that they never got any runners on base in the game with fewer than two outs. They ended up leaving 11 men stranded on the night. With the loss the Slammers dropped their 13th consecutive game.

For Starters...

Matt Sommo struggled in his most recent outing as he gave up nine runs on eight hits in four innings of work against the River City Rascals on August 24 in an 11-0 loss for Joliet. He has faced Washington three times this season, twice as a starter, when he was with London. So far Sommo is 0-1 with a 3.97 ERA against the Wild Things. Sommo began the 2012 season with the Sioux Falls Pheasants of the American Association. He most recently pitched for the defunct London Rippers. He played his college ball at Division II University of New Haven. He led all team starters in 2011 with a 4-1 record and a miniscule 1.29 ERA. Sommo struck out 38 batters in 49 innings while walking just 12. Over his collegiate career he carried a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 3-to-1.

Awards...

Slammers' groundskeeper Guy Massaro was named the Frontier League's Groundskeeper of the Year today. Massaro has been the Slammers' groundskeeper since the franchise launched in 2011. Media partner the SouthtownStar was named the Newspaper of the Year.

First two innings...

The Slammers are out-scoring opponents 95-85 in the first two innings. They are being out-scored 388-272 in all other innings.

Movin' on up!

Rookie left-hander Geoff Brown was signed by the Dodgers on Monday. He becomes the third Slammer signed by the Dodgers in recent weeks as he joins RHP Amalio Diaz and RHP Daniel Carela in LA's system. Brown is the seventh Slammer signed to affiliated ball in team history. Brown leaves the Frontier League as the league-leader in appearances this year with 44. He finished with a 3.67 ERA in 41.2 innings with 46 strike outs.

Mr. RBI...

Erik Lis leads the Slammers with 45 RBI on the season.

Team hitting slump...

The Slammers are only hitting .204 as a team over the past 10 games.

Losing streaks...

The Slammers are currently on a 13-game losing streak, the longest losing streak in franchise history. Joliet is also on an eight-game road losing streak, their longest ever on the road. They are currently a franchise worst 21 games under the .500 mark.

Walk this way...

Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 52 walks this season, good for a tie for seventh in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 38 times in 312 at bats.

Error indicator...

Joliet is 11-43 in games when they make an error. They are 24-13 in games when they do not.
