August 30, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners are proud to announce that Hitting Coach Ralph Santana has been named Coach of the Year and Outfielder Javier Herrera has been named to the post season All-Star team in the Frontier League. Voting for awards was done by general managers, coaching staffs, and local media in all Frontier League markets.
"I'm just excited. I want to thank the organization and this team. Without the team and the players I wouldn't have received this award to show how much our guys put hard work and effort in to what we do and believing in the system we have here", Hitting Coach Ralph Santana said. "I would like to thank John and Jayne Simmons for the everything they do and the facilities they have given us." I would also like to thank this town. We have the greatest town and most importantly I would like to thank Mike Pinto for giving me the opportunity in me and believing in me," Santana added.
Santana is in his sixth season with the Miners, fifth as a coach and has been instrumental in the Miners success this season. As hitting coach, Santana has coached the Miners to one of the more formidable offenses in the league. The Miners overall have a .261 batting average, which is fifth in the league. Not only does Santana work with the hitters but he also works with the defense. The Miners have the best defense in the league with a .980 fielding percentage. The Miners have only committed 67 errors, which is also the best in the league.
Javier Herrera was the only player representative for the Southern Illinois Miners selected to the Post-season All-Star team. "It feels good," Herrera said. "You work so hard that by the end of the year, a big thing is that you stay healthy. You get an honor, it means a lot. You put so much focus and do well during the season. When you get this honor, it means you give everything to your ball club and hope everything goes well."
Javier Herrera was one of the three outfielders to be named to the Post-season All-Star team. Herrera was acquired from the Rockford RiverHawks on August 10th for three players to be named later. Herrera was an All-Star with Rockford and is third in the Frontier League with 77 RBI. His .324 batting average is third in the Frontier League behind Abel Nieves of Joliet (.327) and Joash Broadin (.370), formally of the London Rippers. Herrera has amassed 110 hits, which is fifth in the league and has 178 total bases, which is fourth in the league.
The Southern Illinois Miners Organization would like to congratulate Hitting Coach Ralph Santana and Outfielder Javier Herrera on their post-season selections!
