(Washington, PA) - The Washington Wild Things (42-51) scored five runs in the third inning to defeat the Joliet Slammers (35-57) by a final score of 7-2 Thursday night.

Joliet starter Matt Sommo (2-6) took the loss but struck out a franchise record 11 batters in the contest. He went six innings and gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits. The previous record for strike outs in one game was 10; a mark shared by Kevin Crimmel, Steven Maxwell and Jim Schult.

The Wild Things pushed across an unearned run in the first. With two outs and nobody on Gus Benusa reached on a Sommo error. He stole second and scored on a Mark Samuelson single.

Joliet took the lead in the top of the second when Kyle Maunus smacked a two-run home run, his second home run of the series and 10 th of the season.

But Shain Stoner tied the game with a solo homer in the bottom half of the frame.

Then the third inning was Joliet's undoing. Andrew Heck walked to start the frame and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt. AJ Nunziato tripled him home to give Washington the lead. One out later Samuelson walked and Rick Devereaux hit a three-run home run to make the score 6-2 in favor of Washington. Stoner followed with his second home run of the game to extend the Wild Things' edge to 7-2. It was the seventh home run of the series for Washington.

Neither team scored after the third. Sommo got his record setting strike out to end the six as he fanned Nunziato.

Meanwhile Washington's Chris Smith (9-6) went eight innings, giving up only two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out nine to pick up the win.

The loss was Joliet's 14 th in a row. They will look to get back on the winning track Friday night in Normal against the CornBelters. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. as Jim Schult takes the hill. The game will not be on WJOL due to high school football but fans can listen to the entire game on www.ustream.tv/jolietslammers.
