Evansville Otters News Release
(O'FALLON, MISSOURI) - The River City Rascals scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth, and withstood a ninth inning Evansville Otters rally for a 5-4 win on Thursday night. A win would have given the Otters a .500 record and their first road sweep of the season.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Evansville scored the go-ahead run in the third inning. Catcher Billy Killian led off with a double and was plated a few batters later on an RBI groundout from shortstop Taylor Black.
Evansville starter Wynn Pelzer held the 1-0 lead by getting three double plays in the first four innings.
The Otters added to their one run edge in the seventh inning when Black hit a two-run home run to right field.
Down 3-0, River City rallied back with a run in the bottom of the seventh and a game-tying home run from catcher Zach Deutscher in the eighth. After a pitching change, Jeremy Synan came through with a go-ahead two run single for the 5-3 lead.
Evansville fought back for a run in the top of the ninth inning but reliever Justin Gill struck out Runey Davis with the bases loaded to end the game. River City improves to 44-48 with the one-run win. Evansville is now 45-47 this season.
Reliever Nick Kennedy (5-4) earns the win with a scoreless eighth inning. The loss goes to Pelzer (1-4) who yielded four runs in 7.1 innings. The save goes to Gill, his second. Black went 1-for-4 in the game, with a home run and three runs batted in.
Evansville is back at home on Friday night to host the playoff contending Florence Freedom. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Historic Bosse Field. It is Donate Life Night presented by the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization.
Left-hander Matt Zielinski (7-6, 3.93 ERA) will be opposed by righty Andy Clark (1-1, 2.55).
