Game Day Preview: KGN vs MISS
November 13, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release
The Kingston Frontenacs host the Mississauga Steelheads this afternoon at 3:00 pm in a nationally televised CBC game at Leon's Centre. The day is highlighted by a special tribute to the late legendary OHL coach/manager Larry Mavety with many former players, friends and family in attendance in honour of the former Frontenacs and Belleville Bulls boss.
Matchup
The Central Division Steelheads (7-4-1-0) look to catch the Fronts sitting one point back of Kingtson (7-4-2-0) in the Eastern Conference standings heading into Saturday's matinee action. Kingston looks to get back on track after a 6-4 loss on Friday night to Oshawa. The Fronts were down 4-0 before battling back, making it a one-goal game before a goal with 90 seconds left sealed the win for the visitors.
The visitors have won both meetings in Kingston this season, including a 7-2 win on October 9 followed up with a 3-2 OT win on November 3. Kingston has three scorers with more points than Steelhead leader James Hardie (15), who leads Mississauga's attack with 15 points. However, 10 have been goals, with two against Kingston in the previous two matchups between the teams. The Fronts will also need to keep Luca DelBelBelluz off the score sheet as the forward has registered four points (2G,2A) versus Kingston this year.
Special Day
The special teams are strength on opposite ends, with Kingston's third-ranked power play facing a stingy Mississauga penalty-kill sitting second best in the league. The 16 goals with the man-advantage for Kingston is second most overall, with Mississauga having allowed just seven goals against while down a man. Good enough for the third least in the OHL.
The Legend
A five-year semi-pro career in the WHA preceded his time in the OHL, including a career-best 51 pt/157 penalty-minute season in 77 games with the Chicago Cougars in 1973-74. "Mav" began his coaching career with the Belleville Bulls in 1979 before heading down the 401 for the first of two tenures with Kingston. After coaching the Kingston Raiders/Frontenacs from 1988-90, he returned to Belleville with the Bulls until 1997 before settling down for a 23-year run with the Fronts organization from 1997-2020.
The Kingston Frontenacs Hockey Club is raising money in honour of "Mav" that will directly support Kingston's local community. The funds will be donated by Brenda Mavety and her family to less fortunate families in the Kingston community. It was always important to Mav to give back to his community and to provide less fortunate individuals the opportunity to play, watch and learn the game of hockey. You can donate now: https://gofund.me/153fa96f.
Fans are welcomed for a special pre-game ceremony taking place at 2:50 pm.
