Saginaw Spirit News Release
Saginaw, MI - The Saginaw Spirit return to The Dow Event Center this Saturday evening to tangle with their division rival, Sarnia Sting for Military Appreciation Night presented by Bay City Elks Lodge 88. All active and veteran members of all military branches will be admitted for free with proper military identification. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Tonight marks the third meeting of the season between the Spirit and the Sting. Saginaw took the opening meeting in Sarnia on Nov. 5 by a 7-4 score. Down 4-2 in the third period, the Spirit scored five straight goals, the most they've scored in any single period this season. The next night back at The Dow, Sarnia's goaltending was the difference in a 3-2 Sting victory. San Jose Sharks draft Ben Gaudreau made 36 saves to thwart a late comeback chance for the Spirit.
Saginaw last took to the ice Friday in Flint, where they improved their record to 3-0 against the Firebirds this season and picked up their 10th straight win at The Dort Financial Center. The scored opened the scoring on a tally from overage forward Nick Wong, but surrendered the next two in the second period. Captain Cam Baber scored midway through the second period to tie the score 2-2 going into the third. An early third period goal from Baber, his second of the contest, gave the Spirit the advantage once more. Timely saves from New York Islanders prospect Tristan Lennox held the lead in tact long enough for Buffalo Sabres prospect Josh Bloom to fill an empty net and extend his points streak to eight games.
The Sarnia Sting were overwhelmed Friday night at home by a high-octane, Windsor Spitfires offense that tallied seven goals with six players scoring multi-point efforts. Detroit Red Wings prospect Pasquale Zito led the way for the Spits with four points (1G-3A), while New York Rangers pick Will Cuylle and overage Daniel D'Amico each scored three points on the evening. The Sting were led by two goals from Nolan Dann to give him six on the season. Arizona Coyotes prospect Anson Thornton surrendered seven goals on 42 shots, and the Sting were trounced, 7-3.
In the head-to-head meetings this year, the Spirit's Josh Bloom has been the top producer. He has five points (4G-1A) in the first two games of the season against Sarnia. For the Sting, Nolan Burke and Nolan Dann each have three points (2G-1A) to lead the way for Sarnia.
Stick around after tonight's game for the Military Jersey Live Auction with proceeds benefitting the Bay City Elks to support veteran initiatives in the Great Lakes Bay Region.
Sunday, the Spirit host the Kitchener Rangers at 5:30 p.m. for Robotics Night presented by Hemlock Semi-Conductor. Local area Robotics teams will be invited to the game to show off their Robot building talents and a robot will drop the ceremonial first puck.
