Saginaw Spirit News Release
Saginaw, MI - Led by three points from Nolan Burke and 16 saves from Ben Gaudreau, the Sarnia Sting rolled the Saginaw Spirit 6-1 in front of 3,337 at The Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan.
The Sting would open the scoring at 4:28 of the opening period on a two-on-one break with Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Ty Voit and Nolan Burke. Burke tapped the Voit pass over the right shoulder of Spirit goaltender Andrew Oke. 1:25 later, Max Namestnikov broke in all alone and slid a backhand past Oke along the ice to make it 2-0. Burke would pick up his second point of the period when he set up Nolan Dann for his third goal of the season against Saginaw and seventh of the year, overall. Sarnia led 3-0 after one period.
In the second, the Spirit showed their frustration, leading to a skirmish behind the Sarnia net that involved goaltender Ben Gaudreau. Breaking away from the pile and fighting one-on-one was Nolan Dillingham of the Sting and Dalton Duhart of the Spirit. Both received five-minute major penalties. The Spirit were hoping a lift from the fisticuffs, but it was Sarnia who extended their lead to four goals at 9:54 on a Nolan DeGurse goal. Just 1:07 later, Theo Hill put the Sting up by a 5-0 margin. The five-goal spread remained heading into the third period.
4:49 into the third period, Burke scored his second goal of the game to tie Sarnia's season-high goal output of six. Overage forward Nick Wong got the Spirit on the board at 6:36 on a power play goal from Mitchell Smith and Dalton Duhart. That was the only offense Saginaw could muster tonight, falling to Sarnia, 6-1.
Sunday, the Spirit host the Kitchener Rangers at 5:30 p.m. for Robotics Night presented by Hemlock Semi-Conductor. Local area Robotics teams will be invited to the game to show off their Robot building talents and a robot will drop the ceremonial first puck.
