
Funkhouser Deals and the Bats Explode in Hartford

The SeaWolves clobbered a season-high five home runs and were paced by a masterful starting pitching performance by Kyle Funkhouser as they took down the Hartford Yard Goats, 12-0, on Tuesday night at Dunkin' Donuts Park.
The SeaWolves jumped ahead in the top of the first inning against Yard Goats starter Jack Wynkoop. Jacob Robson led off with a double, moved to third on a Will Maddox groundout and scored on a Dominic Ficociello groundout for a 1-0 lead.
The 'Wolves then poured it on in the top of the second to take a huge lead. Chad Sedio led off and reached on an error. Danny Woodrow tripled to left-center, plating Sedio from first for a 2-0 lead. Jake Rogers then clubbed a towering two-run home run to left, giving Erie a 4-0 lead. The home run for Rogers was his fifth and second in the past two games. Harold Castro and Sergio Alcantara followed the long ball with back-to-back singles and both advanced on a double steal. Will Maddox doubled home both baserunners for a 6-0 lead. Ficociello then blasted an opposite-field, two-run home run, his sixth, for an 8-0 lead.
Erie continued to feature the home run game in the fifth. Rogers led off an connected on a solo blast to left, his second of the game, making it 9-0. Alcantara singled with one out and Robson followed with an opposite-field, two-run blast to left, giving the 'Wolves an 11-0 lead.
Rogers put an exclamation point on the offensive outburst by the 'Wolves in the top of the ninth when he blasted his third home run of the game off of reliever Matt Pierpont to extend the Erie lead to 12-0.
Funkhouser combined with Trent Szkutnik, John Screiber and Mark Ecker to toss the 'Wolves second straight shutout. The four Erie pitchers also combined to retire 18 straight Yard Goats from the third inning until two outs in the ninth.
Funkhouser (2-3) earned his second straight win. He tossed six scoreless innings, allowing three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Funkhouser has now struck out at least seven batters in three consecutive starts and it was the first time this season that the Erie right hander did not issue a walk.
Wynkoop (2-6) took the loss for the Yard Goats. He allowed a season-high 11 runs, 10 earned, on 13 hits with no walks and no strikeouts in five innings of work.
The SeaWolves and Yard Goats meet in the middle game of the series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Righty Beau Burrows (5-4, 3.17 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against LHP Evan Grills (0-1, 9.64 ERA).
