Fresno Wins Sixth Straight, 7-4 Over Rival Sacramento
August 26, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO- Despite some of the disappointments the Grizzlies have faced this season, they managed to accomplish something on Thursday night that they weren't able to do all of last season. With its 7-4 victory over rival Sacramento in front of 10,287 fans at Chukchansi Park, Fresno has now won six straight games for the first time since May 7th-14th, 2009.
The Grizzlies (60-73) also continued their dominant display against the River Cats (78-55), winning their 10th game in 13 contests between the teams so far in the season series. The 10 wins already marks an all-time high for Fresno, with three games remaining in the 2011 edition of the Highway 99 Showdown Series.
Fresno took no time getting after Sacramento again, opening the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Brandon Crawford walked with one out and moved to third on an Edgar Gonzalez double. Brett Pill lifted a sac fly to deep left to plate Crawford, giving Pill his 104th RBI of the season.
The Grizzlies opened things up in the second with three straight two-out, RBI-hits, plating four runs. Andres Torres and Crawford each had RBI-singles, before Gonzalez notched his second double in as many innings, scoring both of them to make it 5-0 Fresno. The home side added another score in the third on a Max Ramirez RBI-groundout to open up a six-run advantage.
Shane Loux held the Sacramento offense in check until the sixth inning, when the River Cats collected a trio of consecutive two-out, RBI hits of their own. Wes Timmons and Chris Carter each doubled home a run before Michael Taylor singled home Carter too, cutting the deficit in half at 6-3.
Ramirez immediately padded Fresno's lead in the bottom of the frame, taking Tyson Ross (2-2) very deep just to the left of center field. The ball cleared not only the wall and the grassy berm, it traveled all the way to the pool on the fly, splashing into the water.
Sacramento added a fourth run in the eighth inning against Loux (7-12), who matched his season-high with 8.0 innings of work. He now leads the PCL with 166.0 innings pitched this year. Dan Otero induced three straight groundouts to short in a three-up, three-down ninth inning to lock down his 10th save of the season.
These teams meet again Friday night at 7:05pm as the Grizzlies send southpaw Matt Yourkin (9-6) against a yet to be determined Sacramento starter, as Graham Godfrey, who was originally slated to throw, was recalled by Oakland earlier in the evening.
