EXPRESS CLAIM DIVISION TITLE
Round Rock clinched its first division title since 2006 Tuesday night. Approximately an hour after the Express defeated New Orleans 5-2 at The Dell Diamond, players and staff watched on the videoboard as Memphis defeated Albuquerque 8-1. That reduced Round Rock's magic number to zero and gave the franchise its second Pacific Coast League American Southern Division Championship. Round Rock also made four playoff appearances in the Texas League as the Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, winning title Texas League title in 2000.
LAST NIGHT'S GAMES
Ivan De Jesus Jr. homered twice and drove in five runs as the Isotopes eased past the Express 13-3. Chad Tracy had a two-out RBI single in the top of the first, and Val Majewski followed with a towering two-run homer to center. That was the end of the offense for the Express, who managed only three hits and a walk the rest of the way. De Jesus Jr. led off the bottom of the first with a homer, and Jerry Sands' three-run homer capped a five-run second. Tim Federowicz homered to open the third, and Damaso Espino drilled a one-out single in the fifth. De Jesus Jr. blasted a grand slam in the seventh, and Federowicz tacked on a two-out RBI single in the eighth.
ROUND ROCK OWNS PCL's BEST RECORD
The Express (80-53, .602) have the PCL's best record, two games ahead of Sacramento (78-55, .586). Round Rock has won 11 of its last 14, a stretch that began with three straight wins at Sacramento. The Express are five-and-a-half games ahead of Omaha (74-57, .565) in the overall American Conference standings.
EXPRESS EYE BEST ¬ËOVERALL BEST TRIPLE-A
Round Rock is one-and-a-half games behind the Columbus Clippers (82-52) of the International League for the best overall record in Triple-A Baseball. The Express have picked up four games on the Clippers in the last 12 games. The PCL Champion and the IL Champion will meet Sept. 20 in the Triple-A All-Star Game at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque, N.M.
DIVISION STANDINGS UPDATE
Round Rock (80-53, .602) holds a 14-game lead over Albuquerque (66-67, .496) in the American Southern Division standings. Since Round Rock joined the PCL in 2005, only one American Southern team has won more than 80 games - the 2006 Express won 85. That team and Albuquerque's 2009 squad both had 11-game leads at the regular season's end, the largest division final division leads in that time. Round Rock has at least shared the division lead following 111 of 133 games this season and has led the division outright since June 25. New Orleans (65-68, .489) trails Round Rock by 15 games, while Oklahoma City (61-72, .459) is 19 games back.
ROUND ROCK TRIPLE-A WINS RECORD WITHIN REACH
The Express already have surpassed win totals from five of the previous six seasons as a Triple-A team (since 2005). With 80 wins entering tonight's game, Round Rock needs to win five of its final 11 games to match the 2006 squad's franchise record of 85 wins at the Triple-A level. As a member of the Double-A Texas League, Round Rock won 83 games in 2000, 86 games in 2001, 75 games in 2002 and 86 games in 2004.
TEAM RECORDS WATCH
Round Rock already has established franchise records (Triple-A era) for runs (787), hits (1376), RBI (756), total bases (2229) and sacrifice flies (50). The Express also are on pace to break records in doubles (need 13), home runs (need five) and walks (need three). Round Rock pitchers also have established a franchise record with 969 strikeouts and need 31 to reach 1,000 for the season.
INDIVIDUAL RECORDS WATCH
Chad Tracy has tied Mike Coolbaugh's 2005 record of 101 RBI. ¬Â¦ Esteban German needs 11 hits to match Mark Saccomanno's 2008 record (157). He also needs eight runs to match Brooks Conrad's 2006 record (100). German has established an Express single-season record with 69 walks. ¬Â¦ German has 44 stolen bases, eclipsing Josh Anderson' 2007 previous franchise record (40). German and Anderson are the only Express players to steal at least 30 bases in a season. ¬Â¦ Matt Kata has established an Express record with 11 sacrifice flies. ¬Â¦ Kata has been hit by a pitch 13 times, breaking his own record 11 from last season.
