Iowa Cubs News Release
Oklahoma City, OK - The Iowa Cubs' (62-71) four-run rally in the ninth inning tied the game, but Oswaldo Navarro's walk-off single in the 10th gave the Oklahoma City RedHawks (61-72) a 7-6 win at RedHawks Field tonight. The Cubs are now 2-7 extra-inning game this season while this series is tied 3-3. The RedHawks lead the season series 7-6. With tonight's loss, the Cubs are officially eliminated from playoff contention.
RedHawks' starter Dallas Kuechel held the Cubs in check in his longest Triple-A outing. Brad Snyder connected on a solo homer in the top of the first inning, but that was the only run Kuechel allowed through seven innings of work.
The RedHawks got off to a fast start with four runs in the first inning and two more in the second against Cubs' starter Nick Struck. Brett Wallace doubled in each inning and drove in three. Jake Goebbert, Robinson Cancel, and Drew Locke also added RBI. Struck would complete five innings without allowing any more runs.
The Cubs' bullpen held the RedHawks in check until the offense got going. Hung-Wen Chen worked two scoreless innings and Kyle Smit pitched a perfect eighth.
The Cubs picked up one run in the eighth when Jordan Lyles walked Brett Jackson with the bases loaded. Lyles got out of the eighth, but couldn't get through the ninth. With one out, D.J. LeMahieu hit a home run to left-center that cut the RedHawksâ lead to 6-3. After a single by Scott Moore and a double by Chris Robinson, the RedHawks brought in lefty Fernando Abad. Ryan Flaherty ripped his first pitch into right-center field for a two-run single and the Cubs were within one at 6-5.
Flaherty moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter Lou Montanez and scored the tying run when Jackson poked a double down the left field line. After an intentional walk to Marwin Gonzalez, Abad fanned Snyder to end the inning.
Blake Parker (2-3) retired the RedHawks in order in the ninth to force extra innings, but gave up the game-winning hit to Navarro in the 10th. With two outs, Cancel walked, moved to second on a base hit by Chris Johnson, and scored when Navarro singled to the gap in left-center. It was the second walk-off hit allowed by Parker this season. Jeff Fulchino (1-0) got the final two outs in the top of the 10th and picked up the win.
The Cubs and RedHawks continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05 at RedHawks Field. RH Jay Jackson (7-13, 5.81) will start for the Cubs against LH Xavier Cedeno (2-2, 7.80) for the RedHawks. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
