Aces split doubleheader
August 26, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release
TUCSON, Ariz.-Kevin Mulvey spun a complete game shutout in the opener, and Ryan Langerhans homered in both games Thursday night, as the Reno Aces split a doubleheader with the Tucson Padres at Kino Stadium.
With the split-plus a loss by second-place Tacoma earlier in the evening-the Aces hold a nine-game lead in the Pacific North Division with 11 games left to play. Reno's magic number has been trimmed to three.
In the opener, Mulvey (4-7) scattered just two hits, with four strikeouts and no walks, lifting the Aces to a 2-0 victory. He threw 50 of his 63 pitches for strikes, and earned his fifth-career complete and the fifth in Aces franchise history. It marked Mulvey's second-career complete game shutout and the second in club history. Langerhans homered in the second, and Andy Tracy added an RBI double in the fourth, giving Reno all the offense it would need. Mike Watt (0-1) took the loss in Triple-A debut for Tucson, despite holding the Aces to just two runs over five frames.
In the nightcap, Tucson unlocked a 1-1 tie in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth en route to a 3-1 victory. Aces starter Tom Layne (9-7) took the loss, despite holding the Padres to two runs over five innings. Rob Musgrave (1-2) earned the win for the Padres, and Brad Brach converted the save.
The Aces and Padres hit the fourth leg of this six-game series on Friday night at Kino Stadium. LHP Zach Kroenke (9-2, 5.83 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while Tucson will counter with RHP Samuel Deduno (3-4, 3.77 ERA). First pitch is set for 7 p.m. PT, and all the action can be heard on Fox Sports Radio 630 AM or online at RenoAces.com.
Reno returns home for the final regular season homestand of the year beginning Monday, August 29, at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Aces games, including the 2011 Pacific Coast League playoffs, are available today at RenoAces.com, the Aces Ballpark Box Office or by phone at (775) 334-7000.
