Tucson and Reno Split Doubleheader Thursday
August 26, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Padres News Release
Kevin Mulvey threw the second complete game shutout in the history of the Reno Aces in game one of Thursday's doubleheader. Mulvey held the Padres to two hits in the Aces' 2-0 win. Tucson wasn't able to get a baserunner past first base and Mulvey only threw 63 pitches in the seven-inning victory.
T-Pads starter Mike Watt performed well in his 2011 Triple-A debut, allowing just two runs in five innings. Reno's Ryan Langerhans hit a solo home run in the second inning and Andy Tracy's RBI double in the fourth plated Reno's second run. Watt was transferred from Single-A Lake Elsinore before the game.
Game Two: Tucson 3 Reno 1
WP: Musgrave (1-2)
LP: Layne (9-7)
S: Brach (10)
Time: 1:47
Rob Musgrave pitched five strong innings for his first Triple-A win in game two, as the Padres beat Reno, 3-1. Ryan Langerhans led off the fourth inning with a solo home run, his second of the doubleheader, and it was the only run Musgrave surrendered. Luis Perdomo left the bases loaded in the sixth inning and Brad Brach put down the Aces in order in the seventh for his tenth save.
The Padres scored one run each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Anthony Rizzo doubled in the fourth, stole third base and then scored on Bobby Kielty's RBI groundout. Rizzo's aggressive baserunning led to another Padres run in the sixth when he ran from second to third on a ground ball to shortstop, which allowed him to score on James Darnell's sacrifice fly one batter later.
The Padres have now won two of the first three games from the Aces, who have a magic number of three to clinch the Northern Division.
Next Game: Friday, 7:00 pm - Reno LHP Zach Kroenke (9-2, 5.83) vs. Tucson RHP Samuel Deduno (3-4, 3.77). Tucson Padres Jersey Backpack giveaway, presented by McDonalds, KOLD-TV and KiiM-FM. The first 2,000 kids ages 6-16 with paid admission receive a Tucson Padres Backpack.
