Florence Y'alls News Release
(Washington, PA) - The Florence Freedom (21-27) got off to a fast start Saturday night against the Wild Things (31-19) but Washington came storming back with a four-run fifth inning to beat the Freedom by a score of 5-4.
Florence tallied a pair of runs in the third against Washington starter Tyler Elrod. Ben Kline started the frame with a single to left. Michael Wilson drew a walk and Adam Taylor bunted the runners over. All-Star Cole Miles singled in Kline and Wilson to put the Freedom up 2-0.
They looked to be well on their way to victory as they tallied two more runs in the fourth. With one away Ryan Solberg singled. Then with two down smacked his second single of the game and Wilson drew another walk. Taylor came up huge with a two-out, two-RBI single to put Florence up 4-0.
However Washington began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth a Stewart Ijames hit his second home run of the series to cut Florence's lead to 4-1.
Peter Gehle (3-3) ran into more trouble in the fifth as Blaise Fernandez reached on an infield single. One out later Sam Montgomery doubled him in to make it a 4-2 game. With two away, Garrett Rau doubled home Montgomery and C.J. Beatty launched a two-run home run to give Washington the 5-4 lead.
The Freedom would not record another hit until the ninth. Rob Kelly doubled to begin the ninth inning but pinch runner Gaby Juarbe was thrown out after Ben Kline lined a ball to left that was caught. Juarbe sprinted towards third on the play and could not get back to the bag in time as Washington turned the double play. Closer Jonathan Kountis struck out Wilson to end the game.
Zach LeBarron (1-2) pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the win while Kountis picked up 19th save of the season.
The four-run lead was the largest the Freedom have had in a defeat this season.
Florence will look to win the finale of the three-game set Sunday as All-Star Chuck Weaver (4-2, 1.59 ERA) takes the mound. First pitch is at 5:05 p.m. and all the action can be heard on http://www.allinbroadcasting.com/Florence.html.
