CornBelters' Bats Quiet in Loss at Traverse City

Traverse City, Mich. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, mustered only four hits and stranded 11 runners, eight in the first five innings, in a 3-1 loss to the Traverse City Beach Bums on Saturday night at Wuerfel Park.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Rob Benedict hit a 3-2, two-out, three-run homer over the left field wall to put the Beach Bums ahead 3-0.

The Belters scored on two-out rally in the seventh inning when Santiago Chirino drew a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on line drive to left by Mike Schwartz to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Rusty Shellhorn (4-0) picked up the win despite walking six CornBelters and striking out three while giving up just two hits. Bobby Shore (3-3) took the loss despite holding the Bums to three hits, including the Benedict homer, with three walks and eight strikeouts. D.J. Johnson pitched the ninth for his 13th save.

The series concludes Sunday at Wuerfel Park with a 4:05 p.m. Central first pitch as CornBelters right-hander Cullen Babin (5-2, 3.04 ERA) matches up against Bums lefty Alex Phillips (0-5, 5.06). Pre-game begins at 3:50 at www.normalbaseball.com . After the Frontier League All-Star break, the Belters return home Friday to begin a nine-game homestand starting with the Frontier Greys on CEFCU Fireworks Friday.
