Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Rob Benedict crushed a three-run homer in the last of the fifth inning, giving the Traverse City Beach Bums all the runs they would need in a 3-1 over the Normal CornBelters on Friday night at Wuerfel Park.

Benedict's booming two-out shot came on the seventh pitch of an at-bat off of Normal starter Bobby Shore. Josh Miller had singled up the middle to lead off the frame and moved up to second when Kevin Taylor walked. Benedict battled to a full count before smashing his third homer of the year to left-center.

Rusty Shellhorn started for Traverse City and made it through five scoreless innings. Shellhorn (4-0) worked around a pair of hits and six walks to pick up his second consecutive win. He gave way to Chuck Ghysels, who retired the first five he faced before walking Santiago Chirino on nine pitches with two gone in the seventh. Mike Schwartz singled home Chirino to make it 3-1, but he was thrown out trying to advance to second by Beach Bums left fielder George Barber.

Will Rankin pitched around a hit in the eighth and turned it over to D.J. Johnson in the ninth. The All-Star closer put two runners on base, but got Schwartz to ground out to end the game. Johnson picked up his 13th save of the year with the scoreless ninth.

Shore (3-3) allowed just three runs on three hits in six innings, but it was enough to give the Normal starter the loss. Traverse City was able to win the contest despite posting just three hits.

Traverse City will look to win the series on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. Alex Phillips (0-5, 5.06) will start for the Beach Bums against the CornBelters' Cullen Babin (5-2, 3.04). It's Family FUNday Sunday at Wuerfel Park with discounted kids tickets, postgame kids runs the bases, autographs and player poster giveaway. Those unable to make the game can listen to the broadcast starting at 4:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
