Ard Leads Rascals to Comeback Win

July 12, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release

A back-and-forth battle ended with a come from behind victory for River City, led by All-Star third-baseman Taylor Ard who hit two homers in the contest, driving in three, as the Rascals won 4-3 in game two.

After beating the Thunderbolts by nine in the first game of the series, Brook sent rookie starter Tim Koons to the mound to make his first start since nearly missing a no-hit effort in his last appearance against Gateway. The Bolts would then counter with their own right-hander Travis Tingle, as they attempted to get back on track and climb out of the West Division cellar.

Tim Koons took the mound in the first and quickly picked up where he left off against Gateway, as he struck out two of the first three batters he faced to send the game scoreless into the bottom of the first. Then, in the bottom of the inning, the Rascals would have two runners aboard with only one out but unfortunately strand both keeping the game scoreless after one.

Koons would follow his first inning with another solid trip to the mound in the top of the second, where he again struck out two and kept Windy City scoreless. After the Rascals were again kept off the board in the bottom of the second, Koons would retake the bump to strike out three more batters in the third- giving him seven punch-outs through three.

River City finally took the lead in the bottom of the third- after stranding three Runners on Base through the first two- on a two-out RBI single by third-baseman Taylor Ard- making it 1-0 River City after three in O'Fallon. The lead would not last long however, as the Bolts' best hitter, Kyle Robison, belted a solo-shot to start the fourth- tying the game at one apiece. Windy City then quickly followed the home run with an RBI single courtesy of designated Hitter Davidson Peguero- putting the Thunderbolts on top 2-1.

The Thunderbolts doubled their lead in the top of the sixth on back-to-back doubles to start off the inning- making it 2-0. That would then spell the end of the night for starter Tim Koons as he made it through 5.1, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out nine and walking only one.

The Rascals would then reassert their offensive prowess in the bottom of the sixth as Taylor Ard knocks one out of the park to lead off the inning- cutting the deficit in half. Tingle's night would then come to a conclusion after six innings, where he allowed two runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking one.

No further runs would score until the bottom of the eighth, when Taylor Ard tied up the ballgame with his second lead-off home run of the contest. River City then quickly kept the momentum going, as an RBI double by Curran Redal allowed the Rascals to regain the lead- 4-3- for the first time since the fourth inning.

Heading into the ninth at T.R. Hughes, the Rascals were on top 4-3, and called in the All-Star closer Gabriel Shaw to lock down his 14th save of 2014- which he did with ease facing the minimum three batters. The win in the ballgame therefore, went to reliever Patrick Crider with the loss going to Victor Larez.
