
Miners Defeat Grizzlies in Middle Game of Series

SAUGET, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners scored three early runs and held for a 6-2 win Saturday night against the Gateway Grizzlies in front of a crowd of 5,082 at GCS Ballpark.
The loss gave the Grizzlies their first home series of the loss season and moved their lead in the West Division to just one game over River City.
Southern Illinois (28-22) scored the first run of the game, which was unearned, on a Marquis Riley RBI single that came after a Gateway error.
The Miners tacked on two more runs in the second inning on a Jay Austin two-run single that gave Southern Illinois a 3-0 lead.
Gateway (33-18) cut into the deficit with a run in the second inning on a TJ Bennett RBI single and another tally in the fourth inning on a Landon Hernandez solo home run to right field. The home run for Hernandez was his fifth of the season and his 57th career.
Southern Illinois added to their lead with two runs in the eighth inning on Austin's second two-run single of the game and a tally in the ninth on a wild pitch.
Kerry Kelley (2-2) took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits in seven innings. He walked four and struck out three.
The Grizzlies and Miners wrap up the first of the season with a day game on Sunday at 3:05. Right-hander Tucker Jensen (5-1) makes the start for the Grizzlies.
