Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels put up a pair of four-run frames while four righthanders combined to deal the club's fifth shutout of 2022 in a 5-0 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Thursday night. With the win, Cedar Rapids improves to 28-14 and reclaims a two-game lead in the division over Wisconsin.
Sawyer Gipson-Long was sharp for the Kernels, earning his third win of the season with 6.0 scoreless innings of two-hit baseball. He struck out seven and scattered four walks, working at a 58.3% ground ball rate and inducing 12 whiffs on 84 pitches.
With one away in the fourth, Jair Camargo blasted a ringing double off the top of the right field wall then advanced to third on a Seth Gray single poked into left. Kyler Fedko plated Camargo with a fielder's choice, forcing an errant throw that moved Gray to third. Wander Javier laced a two-strike two-run double down the left field line, later scampering to third on a wild pitch and scoring on an Alerick Soularie RBI groundout.
Cedar Rapids added another in the seventh as Anthony Prato singled, stole second and scored on a single smoked back up the middle by Aaron Sabato.
Insurance came in the eighth as Fedko doubled and Soularie walked two batters later, followed by back-to-back two-out RBI knocks by Will Holland and Prato. A misplayed Christian Encarnacion-Strand grounder scored Holland, then Sabato roped an RBI double down the right field line to make it 9-0.
Brad Hanner, Miguel Rodriguez and Bobby Milacki combined to retire nine of 10 batters faced to close things out, each striking out one with the latter allowing a walk.
Cedar Rapids was active on the basepaths, stealing four bags - two courtesy of Holland.
Game four of the series is set for 6:35 p.m. on Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
