Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - A pair of rocky middle innings did the Cedar Rapids Kernels in on Friday evening, falling 7-3 to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin plated four in the fifth and added two more in response to a Kernels two-spot an inning later, then the Timber Rattlers bullpen held fast the rest of the way to toss up four zeros. Cedar Rapids falls to 28-15 on the season, now one game ahead of Wisconsin.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Kyler Fedko each had multi-hit evenings.
Wisconsin struck first with a run in the second. Aaron Sabato responded two innings later with a game-tying solo home run in the fourth.
Four runs came home on a two-run homer and a two-run double in the fifth for Wisconsin, making it 5-1. The Kernels would load the bases for Encarnacion-Strand in the home half, with the CR third baseman smoking a rocket two-run single deflected off his Wisconsin counterpart to cut the deficit to two.
The Timber Rattlers took advantage of a catcher's interference that negated what appeared to be an inning-ending double play in the sixth to plate two more for the decisive 7-3 lead.
Melvi Acosta, Derek Molina and Andrew Cabezas combined for 3.0 perfect innings of relief to close things out for the Kernels.
Game five of the series is set for 6:35 p.m. on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
