Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers have a busy stretch of games ahead of them, and they made sure to get it started off the right way on home ice. Brian Foster was perfect on 30 shots, as the Nailers blanked the Toledo Walleye, 4-0 at WesBanco Arena, extending their point streak to ten games, while leaping 11 games over .500.
The Nailers opened the scoring in the first period, doing so with a power play that lit the lamp for the sixth time in the last three contests. Mathew Maione fired the puck into the left corner for Riley Brace, who centered a pass to Cody Wydo in the slot. Wydo was patient with his opportunity, turning the puck to his backhand, before lifting a shot underneath the crossbar for his 22nd tally of the season.
After a scoreless middle frame, Wheeling netted a large insurance goal at the 24-second mark of the third period. Cody Wydo spotted Brett Stern jumping up from the left point. Stern put a backhander on net which got denied, but the rebound kicked out to John McCarron, who smacked it in for a two-goal advantage. With 3:23 left, the Nailers extended their lead again. Jordan Kwas battled through a check behind the net, dragged the puck into the slot, and roofed a backhand shot. Chris Ciotti put the finishing touches on the 4-0 Wheeling triumph with an empty netter. Kwas and Dan O'Donoghue had the assists, as both players ended with multiple point nights.
Brian Foster was perfect in goal for the home team, as he stopped all 30 shots he faced for his first shutout in a Wheeling uniform. Jeff Lerg received the loss for Toledo, making 23 saves on 26 shots.
The Nailers will play their next three games on the road, starting on Wednesday against the Fort Wayne Komets at 7:30. Wheeling's next home game takes place on April 1st, which is Duck Dynasty Night Starring Si Robertson. In addition, Valley Harley Davidson presents Biker Night, starting with a ride from their location in Wheeling. The following night, April 2nd, will feature an appearance by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.
