Green Bay Rockers News Release

The Bullfrogs achieved yet another milestone on Thursday night, when former Bullfrog and Samford University player Phillip Ervin was drafted 27th overall by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2013 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

This is the highest a former Bullfrog has been drafted. Previously that honor belonged to Mitch Haniger, who was drafted 38th overall by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2012.

Ervin played for the Bullfrogs in the 2011 season, hitting .305 with six home runs and 34 RBI. He also stole six bases. Prior to the 2013 season, he was also named to the Baseball America Preseason All America team.

In three seasons at Samford, Ervin ranked in the top 10 in school history in career hits (230), batting average (.344), runs scored (157) and doubles (47).

Ervin was a three-time All-SoCon team member. He was named first team All-SoCon in 2012 and 2013, and he was named to the second team as a freshman in 2011.

In the 2013 season at Samford, Ervin batted .337 with 14 doubles, a career-high 11 home runs and 40 RBI. He also stole 21 bases in 23 attempts, and he finished with an impressive .433 on-base percentage and a .597 slugging percentage.

He is the first player in Samford history to be drafted in the first round.
