WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. - The Battle Creek Bombers (5-3) put nine runs up in the top of the second inning against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (3-5) and managed to hold on for a 9-8 victory.
The nine run second began with one out and was aided by eight base hits. The Bombers sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning while collecting four doubles. Kade Scivicque had two of them in the inning and six players recorded an RBI. Rafters' starter Nick Maiers (L, 0-1) was responsible for all nine rune (four earned) and was taken out after the inning.
Bombers' starter Kyle Slack was solid through three before he ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing two walks and two HBP's. He was replaced by reliever Ryan Lavoie (W, 1-0) who gave up a three-run home run on the first pitch to Jackson Slaid. The Rafters plated five in the fourth, cutting the lead to three.
A solo home run by Michael Jurgella in the eighth cut the lead to two. Brian Heldman (S, 2) came on for the four-out save. Wisconsin Rapids led off the ninth with three straight baserunners, cutting the lead to one with runners at the corners and nobody out. Heldman then got Zack Belanger to ground into a force out and promptly struck out Marcus Wheeler and Jurgella to end the game.
