Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Wisconsin Rapids, WI- The Battle Creek Bombers downed the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, 11-9, Friday night at Witter Field in front of 1,087 fans. The Bombers win was the second-straight over the Rafters and gave Battle Creek the series sweep, two games to none. The loss dropped the Rafters to 3-6 on the season and the club has now lost their last four games, dropping them to three games below .500. The Rafters yielded 11 walks throughout the ballgame while issuing five free passes with the bases loaded to give the Bombers the win.
The Rafters offense combined to club 11 hits for just the second time this year, while Rafters designated hitter, Jackson Slaid hit his third home run of the season in four days. The home run was his second in as many nights and was the only extra-base hit of the evening for Wisconsin Rapids. The Rafters are now 0-2 this year when they slug 11 or more base hits.
Wisconsin Rapids jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, plating single runs in the first and second inning. The Rafters added to their lead in the fifth as Slaid led-off the inning with a solo home run to left field. Jeremy Montalbano then slapped a single through the left side to give the Texas Longhorn his first multi-hit game of the season. With Montalbano at first, Marcus Wheeler reached on an error by the second basemen, Mathew Fears. The error was the seventh of the year for the Bomber third basemen and kept Wheelers seven game reach base streak alive. The Rafters would tag the Bombers for two more runs in the inning as right fielder, Derek Peake, roped a two-RBI single to right to give the Rafters a lead, 7-2. The RBI single was part of a three-hit night for the UW-Milwaukee outfielder.
Wisconsin Rapids starter, Brandon Winfield (0-1), made his third start of the season and threw five strong innings for the second consecutive outing. Winfield threw three frames where he needed 15 or fewer pitches to retire the side, while striking out three.
The Bombers would rally as Battle Creek used a four run sixth to pull within one run, 6-7. Battle Creek scored nine runs throughout the final four innings of the ballgame to steal the win away from the Rafters.
Battle Creek improved to 6-3 on the season while the loss dropped the Rafters to 3-6 on the season. The Rafters will look to end their skid as they host a double header Saturday afternoon at Witter Field against the Lakeshore Chinooks. The first game of the doubleheader will be a continuation of the Rafters home opener that was postponed due to inclement weather, May 29. First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m. with the second game set to begin approximately thirty minutes after the conclusion of the first.
