Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester,MN) Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State) pitched seven scoreless innings for the Rochester Honkers in a 9-0 win over the Thunder Bay Border Cats Friday June 7 at Mayo Field. With his performance, he is now 1-0 with an ERA of 0.00 in 13 innings this season for the Honkers.
Rochester got on the board first in the bottom half of the first inning when Connor Goedert (Neosho Community College) drove a double to the left field fence to score Tucker Tharp (Kansas) and Alex Greer (Iowa Western.) Goedert came up to bat with runners on the corners with one out in the third inning and missed a three-run homerun by just a couple of feet, but his drive was plenty deep enough to score Reid Roper (Illinois) for his third RBI on the night to give Spitzack and the Honkers a 3-0 lead.
Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) started the bottom half of the sixth inning off by being hit by a pitch. He later came around to score on a wild pitch during Roper's bases loaded at-bat. Later in the plate appearance, Roper picked up his first RBI of the season when he reached on a fielder's choice. With the two runs, the Honkers build their lead to 5-0 after six innings.
Matt Halloran (Minnesota,) Tharp, and Roper each drew walks in the eighth inning to load the bases for Greer. Greer delivered with a grand slam-his second homerun in as many nights--over the left field fence to blow the game open for the Honkers, making the lead 9-0 after eight innings. Greer finished the game going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI.
Derrick Hadley (Sam Houston State) followed Spitzack's lead by pitching two shutout innings in relief to seal the win for Rochester. Spitzack allowed six hits in his seven innings of work, while collecting four strikeouts. Clint Knoblauch took the loss for Thunder Bay. He allowed three runs on three hits in 2.1 innings. He walked five batters and struck out one.
The two teams will finish up a two-game series Saturday, June 8, at 7:05 p.m. at Mayo Field. Elliott Engle (Doane College) is scheduled to make the start for Rochester (5-5), while Daniel Stoney is slated to start for Thunder Bay (5-5).
