Bullfrogs Lose in Extra Innings in Eau Claire
June 7, 2013 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
The Bullfrogs lost a hearbreaker in Eau Claire on Thursday night, falling 5-4 in extra innings against the Express.
Green Bay got out to a hot start, collecting three straight hits to begin the game. The Bullfrogs took a 1-0 lead when Jose Godinez (St. Norbert) drove home Robert Youngdahl (Notre Dame) with an opposite field single.
The Bullfrogs tacked on another run in the second to extend their lead to 2-0. Cabe Reiten (Gonzaga) walked with the bases loaded to bring him Jack Parenty (Stony Brook). The Bullfrogs stranded the bases loaded to end the inning.
In a wild third inning, Green Bay was able to tack on two more runs to extend the lead to 4-0. Jimmy Coady (UW-Stevens Point) scored on an error for the inning's first run. Later in the inning, Bryant Burleson (Texas Tech) lined a ball back to the mound that Express pitcher T.J. Larson (Minnesota State) appeared to have caught for an out. Confusion reigned on the field as players and coaches discussed with umpires whether or not Larson had caught the ball. During this time, a time out had never been called for, and Mitch Ghelfi (UW-Milwaukee) sprinted home from third to score the fourth Bullfrogs lead of the game.
The Express notched a run in the sixth inning, and Green Bay took a four run lead into the 9th inning. Johnathon Tripp (Texas Tech) came on for his third save attempt of the season, but allowed three runs to tie the game up at four apiece. The Express then walked off with a single in the tenth inning to snag a 5-4 victory over Green Bay.
Matt Freeman (St. Norbert) took the loss for the Bullfrogs. Jarrod Dettman (Century College) earned the win for Eau Claire.
The Bullfrogs are now 4-4 on the season, and the Express are 2-6. The Bullfrogs will play game two of the series in Eau Claire tomorrow. Start time is 7:05, and the game can be heard on 107.1 WOCO or on greenbaybullfrogs.com.
