Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY- The Florence Freedom returned to the Home of the Florence Freedom after a nine-game road trip. After losing both games in a double-header against the Evansville Otters on Sunday, the Freedom lost their 3rd straight ballgame to the Gateway Grizzlies by a score of 6-4.
RHP Daniel DeSimone made his 7th start of the year and was handed his 3rd loss of 2012 as he went just four innings, while allowing two earned runs on five hits and three walks. His counterpart, Gateway's RHP Tim Brown, continued his solid pitching as he improved to 4-2, while giving up two earned runs on eight hits in six innings of work.
After two off-days, the Freedom did not get their six-game home stand off to a good start, as they did not lead once in the series opener against Gateway. The visitors scored twice in the 1st inning off DeSimone when he allowed five Grizzlies to reach base in the inning. After the 1st, the Miami, FL native settled down and did not allow a run until the 4th, when C Landon Hernandez hit a solo homer to left field.
The Freedom did not light up the scoreboard until the 3rd inning, when 2B Pierre LePage scored on a double by LF David Harris, who also came around to score on a single by DH Junior Rodriguez. They also scored once in the 6th inning when 3B Chris Curley scored on a C Jim Jacquot single, and once in the 7th when LePage crossed the plate on a Harris single.
RHP Ian Durham entered the game in the 5th and tossed just .1 innings before RHP Jose Velazquez came in with the bases loaded and got an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. In the 6th, however, Velazquez surrendered two runs to give the Grizzlies a 5-3 lead.
RHP Brennan Flick entered the game in the 6th with one out and gave up a run in the 7th when Chris McClendon scored on a John Shelby single to center field. The Freedom's RHP Matt Kline was excellent in the 8th and 9th innings as he pitched two scoreless innings without allowing a hit. Gateway's RHP Zach Treece pitched the 7th and 8th innings without allowing a run while striking out four. RHP Richard Barrett entered the game in the 9th and earned his 6th save of the year as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning to end the game.
The Freedom hope to even the series tomorrow at 7:05 pm as Florence's LHP Andres Caceres (3-1) will face Gateway's RHP JaVaun West (0-1) at the Home of the Florence Freedom.
