Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL)- After putting up 10 runs in the series finale with Windy City, the Slammers returned home to Silver Cross Field Wednesday and were met with a stellar plate performance by the Southern Illinois Miners and a 11-8 loss.

The Miners put two across right off the bat. Leadoff man Darian Sandford singled to open the game, and in the next at-bat, Jake Kaase ripped an RBI double to start the scoring. They notched an insurance run later in the inning on a run-scoring groundout from Carlos Mendez. Joliet powered back in the home half to take a 4-2 lead via RBI singles from Josh Lyon and David Fox and an RBI groundout from Zach Mandelblatt.

The Miners stole the lead back in the third with one away when Ken Gregory belted a grand slam, making it 6-4. They picked up an extra run in the fourth on a solo homer from Kaase.

Joliet closed the gap in the seventh on a Miners fielding error to put the game within two. But Southern tacked three more on the scoreboard in the eighth on a fielder's choice and a pair of singles to make it 10-5. Two errors in the inning contributed to the run scoring. Two more scored in the bottom of the inning for Joliet: another RBI base hit for Fox, and a sac fly from Brad Netzel.

The Miners pulled ahead again in the final frame on an error by Hector Pellot, but Joliet put the deficit back at three runs in the bottom half on an Abel Nieves solo shot.

For the first time since his professional debut, Steven Maxwell struggled for Joliet in the start, and was replaced in the fifth inning and was stuck with the loss. Chase Doremus, Dustin Quattrocchi, Brian Smith, and Tyler Ware finished off the contest.

The Slammers keep the homestand rolling Thursday in game two with the Miners at 7:05pm . If you can't make it to the game, fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
