Miners Take Series Opener from Slammers

Joliet, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners defeated the Joliet Slammers at Silver Cross Field 11-8. Dave Harden (5-1) earned his fifth win of the season by pitching seven strong innings. He gave up six hits over that span and allowed five runs (two earned). He walked one batter and struck out three.

The Miners scored first off Slammers starter Steven Maxwell in the top of the first inning. Jake Kaase had a RBI double and Carlos Mendez had a RBI ground-out to give the Miners a 2-0 lead. However, that lead was short as the Slammers scored four runs off Dave Harden in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead.

The Miners would re-take the lead in the top of the third inning with one out. Designated hitter Ken Gregory hit a one out grand slam to give the Miners a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning off Maxwell. The Miners added another run off Maxwell in the top of the fourth inning when Jake Kaase hit a solo home run to give the Miners a 7-4 lead.

The Slammers scored a run off Harden in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the lead to 7-5 in the favor of the Miners. The Miners came right back in the top of the eighth inning with three runs to take a 10-5 lead. Two errors and a base hit by Carlos Mendez (all unearned) helped give the Miners a five run lead. The Slammers scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth off Ryan Quigley to cut the lead to three 10-7.

The Miners scored another run in the top of the ninth to take a 11-7 lead. Abel Nieves homered for Joliet in the bottom of the ninth off Anthony Collazo to cut the lead 11-8. The Miners would go on to win the game 11-8. With the win, the Miners improve to 22-15 on the season, three games behind Traverse City in the Eastern Division. First pitch from Silver Cross Field in Joliet tomorrow is at 7:05 pm.
