SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Alaska Aces jumped out to an early two-goal advantage and rode goalie Peter Aubry the rest of the way in an eventual 2-1 victory over the San Diego Gulls Sunday before 5,247 at the San Diego Sports Arena.

The game opened slowly, with neither team managing even a shot on goal until Mike Scott chipped a puck toward the San Diego net that B.J. Young redirected past Gulls starter Eddy Ferhi at 3:03 of the first period. Alaska's second goal also came on a tip of sorts, as Mike Clarke smacked a loose puck out of mid-air by Ferhi at 11:12 for his second goal in three games and a 2-0 lead at intermission.

The Aces fell silent in the second period, managing just two shots in the first 18 minutes of the frame and failing to take advantage of three power play opportunities. The Gulls drew within 2-1 when Brian Gornick beat Aubry from the top of the crease at 2:36, but Alaska still held a one-goal lead heading to the final 20 minutes.

Clinging to its playoff life, San Diego launched a desperate flurry in the final five minutes of regulation, but Aubry proved equal to the task, stopping Gornick from point-blank range with 4.6 seconds to go and finishing off his 24th win of the year with 34 saves, including 14 in the third period alone. Alaska improves to 38-16-7 overall and is 11-1-1 in its last 13 road games.

The Aces, who retain first place in the West Division by two points over Bakersfield, will take Monday off before heading to Fresno for a Tuesday date with the fourth-place Falcons at 6:00 p.m. AST, broadcast live on a pay-per-view basis at www.alaskaaces.com, courtesy of B2 Networks, as well as on KFQD 750 AM, with coverage beginning 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off. Alaska swept a pair of games from Fresno in its only previous trip to the Save-Mart Center this season, during the weekend of November 5-6.
