FC Dallas News Release
FRISCO, Texas (Jan. 22, 2013) - FC Dallas drafted midfielders Cameron Brown, TJ Nelson and Cam Wilder as well as goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft, held today via conference call.
The four players will now join FC Dallas for preseason training camp, which opened Monday at FC Dallas Stadium.
Brown, 23, scored 11 goals and added eight assists in three seasons with the University of North Carolina before suffering an offseason knee injury that kept him out of the 2010 and 2011 collegiate seasons. Brown started four matches as a freshman in 2007 and ended his career with 64 appearances by the end of the 2009 season. He was a member of both the 2005 U.S. Under-17 World Cup player pool and 2007 U.S. U-20 National Team pool.
Zobeck played four seasons at Valparaiso, where he put together the best goalkeeping season in program history as a redshirt junior in 2011. That season the Iowa native posted a 0.66 goals against average in 20 games, recording 51 saves and 11 shutouts. In his career with the Crusaders, Zobeck played in 53 games, recording 185 saves and 19 clean sheets. He set a school single-season record in 2011 with his 11 shutouts and 0.66 goals against average, helping Valpo to a top-10 national ranking in shutout percentage (0.55, 9th) and GAA (0.66, 10th). He finished his collegiate career as Valparaiso's career record holder in shutouts and goals against average.
Wilder, 22, appeared in 49 matches between 2009 and 2011 for the University of Kentucky. The versatile midfielder recorded an assist in all three collegiate seasons he played. He was a member of the U.S. U-18 National Team in 2009.
Nelson was one of 54 college seniors invited to the annual MLS Combine Jan. 11-15 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The two-time SMU team captain earned second team All-Midwest Region honors and was named to the All-Conference USA second team following his senior season. He helped guide the Mustangs' defense to the top of the league in goals allowed (6), goals against average (0.75), saves (47) and shutouts (4). He appeared in 71 games for SMU during his collegiate career, recording two goals and five assists.
