Portland Timbers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers today selected two players in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft, selecting goalkeeper David Meves and midfielder/forward Chris Hegngi.

The Timbers held the third pick in each round of the Supplemental Draft and selected Meves, from the University of Akron, with the No. 3 overall pick. Hegngi, from Ohio State University, was selected No. 22 overall in the second round. Portland opted not to select a player in the third and fourth rounds.

Meves, 22, finished his collegiate career at Akron, where he played under Timbers head coach Caleb Porter, as the NCAA's all-time leader in shutouts (54) and goalkeeper minutes played (8,068). The Arlington Heights, Ill., native was a four-time All-Mid-American Conference selection and earned All-America honors following a successful senior campaign, in which he allowed just eight goals in 22 games, in 2012. He was a key contributor in the Zips' national championship run in 2010, recording an NCAA record 11 consecutive shutouts that season. Meves set several school records during his collegiate career at Akron, including marks for career wins (77) and goals-against average (0.50). A former member of the U.S. U-17 and U-18 National Teams, Meves assembled a career record of 77-7-10 over 94 matches during his time with the Zips.

Hegngi, 21, was a four-year starter at Ohio State. He started all 19 games, registering three goals and three assists and garnering All-Big Ten second-team honors as a senior in 2012. He was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year as a junior in 2011 after leading the Buckeyes in scoring with nine goals in 19 games. From Silver Spring, Md., Hegngi compiled 18 goals and 11 assists over 79 matches during his time at Ohio State and was a two-time All-Big Ten honoree. Prior to his collegiate career, Hegngi was a product of the D.C. United Academy and led its U-17 squad to the 2007 SUM-17 International Tournament title in Spain.
