CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, January 22, 2013) - Chivas USA announced today that the club has acquired Mexican-American midfielder Eric Avila in a trade with the Colorado Rapids in exchange for midfielder Nick LaBrocca. Per league and team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Avila's rights were acquired by Colorado in the 2012 Re-Entry Draft from Toronto FC. The 25-year-old spent two seasons in Toronto after being traded by FC Dallas during the 2011 season. Avila recorded career-highs for games played (24), games started (16) and minutes played (1,366) last season with the Reds, while recording a goal and three assists.
The UC Santa Barbara product made his MLS debut in 2008, appearing in 63 games from 2008-2011 for FCD. Avila has also been selected for international duty, most recently with the U-23 U.S. Men's National Team in 2007. In 2006 Avila was a member of the U-20 National Team. He earned his first selection with the U-17 squad at the age of 15 in 2003 and has participated in the U.S. Residency Program in Bradenton, Fla.
Chivas USA will kick off its ninth season when it hosts the Columbus Crew at The Home Depot Center for First Kick 2013 on Saturday, March 2, beginning at 7:30 p.m. PT.
