Round Rock Express News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - The bats came alive in Colorado Springs! The Round Rock Express (13-10) won the offensive tug-of-war against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (9-13) 11-10 Monday night at Security Service Field. Reliever Carlos Fisher (3-0, 3.83) picked up his third win while Sky Sox reliever Damien Magnifico (0-3, 3.00) was tagged with the loss.

The Express took a dominant 7-0 lead after just two innings on just five hits. Sky Sox starter Ariel Pena struck out the first two batters to start the game, but then started unraveling by giving up a solo shot to Express CF Jared Hoying. Patrick Kivlehan drew a walk and scored on an Ike Davis double in the next at-bat. 2B Pedro Ciriaco drew the second walk of the game but was left stranded as LF James Jones struck out to end the inning.

The E-Train kept rolling in the second inning as 1B Drew Robinson and C Patrick Cantwell led off with back-to-back walks. Ryan Strausborger hit a single to shallow center to load the bases with no outs. That would be it for Pena as Sounds manager Rick Sweet went to the bullpen for LH Brent Suter. Profar worked back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk to plate the third run of the game. Hoying grounded into a force out with Sounds C Josmil Pinto getting Cantwell out at home. After Kivelhan popped out for the second out, Davis came up huge again with his second double of the game, clearing the bases for a 6-0 lead. Ciriaco singled to score Davis before Suter sent Jones down swinging, ending the offensive threat.

Round Rock's offense came surging again in the third inning. With one out, Cantwell and Strausborger hit back-to-back singles. Profar popped out and then Hoying was plunked by the fourth pitch of the at-bat to load the bases. Suter cooled the Express' hot bats and got Kivlehan to pop up to end the inning.

Express starter Chi Chi Gonzalez was perfect for the first 2.2 innings, not allowing a single baserunner. With two outs in the third, Gonzalez gave up back-to-back-to-back singles, making it 7-1 Express. After a double-steal put runners on second and third, Gonzalez uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Keon Broxton to score.

Sky Sox 1B Andy Wilkins started the fifth with a single. One out later, DH Garin Cecchini grounded out, sending Wilkins back to the dugout. RF Michael Reed drew a walk to put two men on. Pinto and Elmore hit consecutive singles, plating both Cecchini and Reed, cutting the Express lead to three.

The Express bounced back in the fifth with a leadoff triple from Robinson. One out later, Strausborger singled to score Robinson. Profar grounded into a double play to end the inning, 8-4 Express.

Colorado Springs again plated two runs in the fifth with two singles to start the inning. Wilkins hit a deep sacrifice fly to score one run while Will Middlebrooks grounded out two drive in another.

The scoring continued for both teams in the sixth as they each plated a run. Hoying drew a leadoff walk in the top half of the frame and came across the dish in the next at-bat as Kivlehan launched a double to left field. Three consecutive outs ended the inning for the E-Train.

Round Rock reliever LHP Jimmy Reyes came in for Gonzalez to start the sixth. Gonzalez went 5.0 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits. Reyes gave up a leadoff double to Pinto who advanced to third two batters later. After Young Jr. popped out, Arcia singled to score Pinto, making it 9-7 Express.

The Sky Sox took over in the seventh inning thanks to three runs. Middlebrooks started the barrage with a double. Cecchini singled to advance Middlebrooks. Reed hit into a ground out that eliminated Cecchini at second, but scored Middlebrooks. That would be it for Reyes as Express manager Jason Wood signaled RHP Anthony Carter from the bullpen. With Pinto at bat, Reed stole second. Pinto would eventually strikeout for the second out of the inning. Elmore hit a single to right field to score Reed. Elmore took one out of Reed's book and stole second before Broxton singled up the middle to make it 10-9 Sky Sox.

Round Rock didn't stay behind for too long, tying it up in the top of the 8th. Sky Sox reliever Jim Miller came in to start the inning and gave up a leadoff single to Profar. One out later, Kivlehan drew a walk to put two men on. That closed the book on Miller as Sweet called in Damien Magnifico to take over. The hero of the night, Davis, came through for a third time by ripping a single to score Profar and tied it up at 10.

Colorado Springs had a short taste of victory and wanted more. RHP Luke Jackson came in to start the bottom of the eighth. After striking out the first two batters on seven pitches, Jackson gave up a single to Middlebrooks. Cecchini and Reed drew back-to-back walks to load the bases and that would be it for Jackson. RHP Carlos Fisher came in to diffuse the impending threat. Six pitches later, Fisher closed the inning on a foul-tip strikeout.

Heading into the ninth, Robinson knocked a one-out single and advanced to third on a Cantwell single to put runners on the corners. Strausborger placed a perfect bunt to plate Robinson and give the Express the lead again, 11-10. Profar drew four-pitch walk to load the bases. That would be it for the Express offense though as Hoying was called out on strikes and Kivlehan grounded out to send it to the bottom of the ninth.

Fisher stayed in to close out the game in the bottom half of the frame, retiring the side in order to keep the E-Train rolling to a 11-10 victory. He picked up his third win of the season in the process.

The Express and Sky Sox will meet again Tuesday for game two of the four-game set. The Express will send RHP Nick Martinez (1-1, 3.68) to the mound against the Sky Sox RHP Taylor Jungmann (--). Following this four-game road trip, the Express will return home on Friday for an eight-game homestand.
