Florida Everblades News Release

ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (4-3-0) used a pair of short-handed goals and two power play goals to help propel them to a 6-2 win over the Kalamazoo Wings (3-2-0) on Friday night at Germain Arena in front of a crowd of 3,807.

A three-goal second period outburst helped push the Everblades to their second straight win and their third win at home. Overall the game began well for Kalamazoo, carrying the play for the first 10 minutes and jumping to a quick 1-0 lead at 3:43 when Sam Ftorek squeezed a tight angle shot from the bottom of the right circle over the left shoulder of Everblades net-minder Bobby Goepfert.

After the mid-period media timeout the Everblades came to life pressuring the K-Wings over the final half of the opening period and eventually tying the score at one with a 5-on-3 power play goal. Francis Lemieux notched his second goal of the season on a nice deflection of a point shot by Kyle Lawson at 15:07 to even the score. Mitch Fadden picked up his seventh assist of the year on the play as well.

With under two minutes remaining in the frame Florida took their first lead of the night with their second power play goal of night when Mathieu Roy was left alone on the Kalamazoo doorstep before taking a pass from Alex Hutchings and stuffing the puck past K-Wing goalie Garrett Zemlak with 1:02 remaining in the period. Along with Hutchings, Ethan Graham collected an assist on the goal.

Like the first period, the second started well for Kalamazoo tying the game at two with a short-handed marker at 4:33 on a strong individual effort by Brandon Svendsen who battled his way from his own end down the right side boards before cutting through the right circle and lifting a shot over Goepfert.

From that point however the Everblades took control of the game. Less than two minutes after the Wings tied the game Matt Beca gave the Everblades back the lead for good after deflecting a right point shot from Phil Paquet past Zemlak for his first goal of the year.

Less than two minutes later at 7:40 Hutchings notched his second goal of the year to open a 4-2 lead. With the Everblades short-handed Matthew Pistilli intercepted the puck in the Florida zone before sending a long lead pass through center. Hutchings chased the puck down in the offensive zone before putting a quick deke on Zemlak and tucking a backhand shot into the net.

The Everblades opened up a commanding three goal lead late in the second period when Fadden collected his second goal of the season at 18:22. After a left point shot by Graham sailed wide and off the end boards, the puck sat on the back of the Kalamazoo net where Lemieux chopped it free and fed Fadden with a pass in the right circle. From there Fadden swung to the front where he lifted a quick snap shot over the glove of Zemlak.

The Everblades played a solid third period keeping the Wings at bay then added the final exclamation point with their second short-handed goal of the night with 22 seconds remaining in the game. With the K-Wings on the power play, Mike Kennedy intercepted a pass at the Everblades blue line before feeding a pass ahead to Pistilli who muscled his way around a defender and to the front of the net where he snapped a shot inside the left post for his third goal of the year.

In goal Goepfert earned the win to improve to 3-1-0 after stopping 25 of 27 shots. Zemlak, who was seeing his first action of the year took the loss allowing the six goals on 32 shots.

On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 2-of-6, while Kalamazoo closed out the game 0-of-6.
