Gladiators Edge Devils, 3-2, in Shootout

October 29, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release

Trenton, NJ - Despite 67 saves from Devils goaltender Dave Caruso, and third period goals by Tony Zancanaro and J.S. Berube which erased a 2-0 Gladiators' lead, Michael Davies and Matt Krug scored shootout goals to lead Gwinnett to a 3-2 victory over the Trenton Devils on Friday night at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton.

In the return-match of a hard fought game on Thursday night, the Gladiators got a quick jump on the Devils when they struck the first blow of the evening during the game's first shift. The score occurred when Tim Filangieri bullied his way to the front of the net through the Devils' defense to gain possession of a Dave Caruso rebound, which the Long Island, NY. native defenseman made no mistake with, giving Gwinnett a 1-0 lead just 14 seconds into the contest. Following Filangieri's first goal in his 55-game ECHL career, the Gladiators swarmed Caruso as they fired a total of 20 shots on the fourth-year Devil goalie during the opening 20 minutes of action. The Devils, unable to find a goal of their own in the game's opening stanza, mustered a total of 10 shots in what was an otherwise penalty-filled first period which saw the teams combine to take 24 minutes in penalties.

Early in the second period, the Devils had a pair of golden opportunities to tie the score, but Gwinnett goaltender Chris Carrozzi stymied both Jeremy Akeson and Ryan Ginand on breakaways to preserve the Gladiators' lead. The Gladiators then doubled their edge over the Devils at 6:55 by making the score 2-0 on former-Devil Chris Poli's first marker with his new team after having been traded by Trenton to Gwinnett on September 2, 2010.

Despite heading into the third period trailing by a pair of goals, the Devils refused to quit, cutting the deficit in half on a Tony Zancanaro marker at 7:21. Zancanaro beat Gwinnett goaltender Chris Carrozzi with a tricky shot from behind the goal line, knocking the puck off of the inside of the former Atlanta Thrasher draft pick's leg for his second goal of the season. Although not a power play goal, the Devils' first goal of the game did occur while the Devils were playing with a man-advantage, as Dave Caruso had vacated his crease during a delay penalty call. The Devils then pulled even 7:18 later, when J.S. Berube won a foot-race with a Gladiators' defenseman to a loose puck in the slot, which the first-year Devils' forward buried to tie the score, 2-2, with 5:21 remaining in regulation. Kory Nagy and Taylor Vichorek both recorded assists on both goals, with the points being the Moose Lake, MN. native Vichorek's first two points in professional hockey.

The score remained even as the game then moved into overtime, where the Gladiators were awarded a power play after a hooking call against Jeff Prough with 2:24 remaining. Ryan Garbutt nearly won the game on two occasions, but was absolutely stoned cold by Dave Caruso in the final minute. On the night, Caruso had a total of 68 saves, with his two against Garbutt arguably being his two best of the young season. With neither team finding the game-winning goal in the five minute overtime, the game then moved into a shootout.

In the shootout, despite Ryan Hayes beating Carrozzi with Trenton's first attempt, Michael Davies and Matt Krug both were able to beat Caruso to earn the Gladiators a 3-2 victory, and a split in their two-game series in New Jersey's Capital City. The Devils earn a single point in the standings for their effort as their record now stands at 2-3-0-1.

The Devils will next be in action on Friday, Nov. 5 when they take on the defending Kelly Cup Champions, the Cincinnati Cyclones at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton. The opening faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
