Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - In a Friday night match-up at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Salmon Kings took on the Ontario Reign in the second game of a three-game set. The Salmon Kings gave Riley Gill the start in goal, while the Reign went with Kellen Briggs.
Victoria opened the scoring at 13:58 of the first period on the power play when P.J. Atherton's point shot hit a leg in front of the net and came to the stick of Matt Stefanishion who put the puck past Briggs for his first of the season. Jordan Morrison pulled Ontario level at 17:47 after finding the puck during a goal-mouth scramble to put it past Gill. Morrison's marker was his second of the campaign. The Salmon Kings and Reign went into the second period tied 1-1.
Victoria regained their lead at 1:39 of the second frame when Kiel McLeod notched his first marker of the season after deflecting Geoffrey Waugh's point shot past Briggs' glove into the net. Chad Painchaud increased the Salmon Kings lead a minute later after walking out from the right corner and putting the puck through the legs of Briggs. Painchaud's third tally of the year forced a goaltending change, as Beau Erickson replaced Kellen Briggs in the Ontario net. Derek Couture got Victoria's second power play goal of the game at 5:40 after he capitalized on the rebound from Atherton's initial shot, putting it past Erickson into the Reign net. The Salmon Kings got their fifth goal of the night at 9:35 after Rob Hennigar got his own rebound and went high-blocker side on Erickson for his first goal of the season. Ontario got one back at 17:15 after Luke Beaverson's one-timer from the point beat Gill high-glove. Victoria took their 5-2 lead into the second intermission.
The Reign got their third goal of game at 1:21 of the third period when C.J. Stretch took Chaz Johnson's pass from behind the net and put the puck past Gill. Rick Cleaver restored Victoria's three-goal lead at 12:46 after he got a rebound in front of the net and shot it past Erickson. Cleaver's first tally of the year rounded out the scoring for the night. Salmon Kings 6 Reign 3.
Victoria went 2/5=40.0% on the power play, while Ontario was 0/5=00.0%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Reign 37-24.
