Des Moines, IA March 20, 2014 - The Iowa Energy took down the East division leaders Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Thursday night at Wells Fargo Arena in a thrilling game.
The Mad Ants jumped out to the early lead behind Trey McKinney-Jones, who had 11 of his game high 25 points in the first quarter. Fort Wayne led 27-24 after one.
The Mad Ants pushed their lead to nine before the Energy started to climb back behind guard Austin Freeman. Freeman scored 12 of his team high 23 points in the quarter. Washington Wizards assignee Glen Rice Jr. had 10 of his 15 in the quarter and helped the Energy take a 72-67 lead into the half. Fort Wayne's Tony Mitchell had 13 of his 18 points in the second.
Fort Wayne outscored Iowa 28-21 in the third quarter and took a 95-93 lead into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was back and forth between the two teams. The Energy took a 122-117 lead after Freeman completed a 4-point play with 32 seconds to go. Fort Wayne continued to crawl back, but Iowa's Moses Ehambe sank the clutch free throws, finishing the night 10 of 10 at the charity stripe. Fort Wayne's Sadiel Rojas hit a 3-pointer as the final buzzer sounds, but Iowa came away with the 129-128 victory. The Energy improve to 25-17 on the season, as Fort Wayne falls to 28-16.
The Mad Ants were led by McKinney-Jones' 25 points. Mitchell added 18 points and 7 rebounds off the bench. Tim Ohlbrecht had 17 points and 9 boards. Ron Howard finished the night with 16 points, 5 boards, and 4 assists.
Freeman and Ehambe helped lead the charge, each finishing with 23 points. Patrick Christopher finished with 20 points. Rice Jr. added 7 rebounds and 4 assists to his 15 points. Othyus Jeffers had 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals.
The Energy will take on the Tulsa 66ers on Saturday night at 7 PM. The game will be the Energy's final Wells Fargo Big Assist Night with Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa. The game will also feature $2 beer and the first 1,000 fans through the doors will receive a mini Ricky Rubio bobblehead.
