December 28, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID - The Idaho Steelheads, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Dallas Stars and the AHL's Iowa Stars, are pleased to announce that winger Garett Bembridge and goaltender Steve Silverthorn are the recipients of the ECHL weekly awards for their respective positions.
The ECHL chose Bembridge as the In Glas Co Player of the Week, while Silverthorn is the Reebok Hockey Goaltender of the Week for games played from December 19 to December 25.
In two convincing victories at Phoenix on December 21 and 22, the 24-year-old Bembridge racked up six points, including four goals. He was also a +1 with 13 shots in the two games. Earlier this season, Bembridge was the CCM Player of the Month for November when he had 21 points in 11 games. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native is currently leading the league in goals (23) and points (46).
With the award, Bembridge becomes the first ECHL player this season to garner player of the week honors twice. Bembridge's efforts from November 21 to November 27 earned him the distinction earlier this year.
Silverthorn, a 24-year-old rookie from Owen Sound, Ontario, won both of the team's games at Phoenix last week. In a 7-0 win on December 21, Silverthorn stopped all 34 shots he faced to earn his first professional shutout. The following night, Silverthorn made 19 saves, en route to a 5-3 win.
The Colgate University product leads the Steelheads with 10 wins, seven of which have come on the road. Through 15 appearances, Silverthorn sports a record of 10-4-0 with a 2.89 GAA and a save percentage of 89.8%. The award marks the second time this season the ECHL has recognized Silverthorn. On November 8, he was selected as the runner-up for the same award for league play during the week of October 31 to November 6.
The Steelheads return to the ice on Thursday, December 29, when they host the San Diego Gulls. Face-off is at 7:10 p.m. MST. For tickets, call (208) 331-TIXS.
