
Royals Pounce on Thunder

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder (5-13-3, 13 points) suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Reading Royals (16-6-2, 34 points), with the game quickly turning into the battle of the goaltenders. In front of a crowd of 4,807, Thunder netminder Jake Moreland collected 37 saves, outdueled by Royals counterpart Yutaka Fukufuji's 34 saves.
Thunder defenseman Dave McCulloch excited the crowd early with a goal 2:50 in the first period, pouncing on a rebound at the left circle. The lead was soon erased by the Royals' Doug Christiansen, who scored 8:24 into the period for a 1-1 tie.
Reading came into the second period with a strong attack, capped by Mike Pandolfo's even-strength goal, finishing with a highlight-reel assist from Mike Kompon at the 15:21 mark for a 2-1 Reading advantage.
Reading locked up the game in the third period's 5:51 mark, when Pandolfo scored his second goal for the night on a rebound near the crease for a 3-1 Reading lead. Nathan Martz missed on the Thunder's first ever penalty shot at the 16:41 mark in the first period. The Thunder and Royals return to play on Wednesday with a 7pm (PT) faceoff at Stockton Arena.
