Charlotte Checkers News Release
Greenville, South Carolina - Tuesday, December 27, 2005) The Charlotte Checkers had something to prove Tuesday night in Greenville. After being thrashed Monday at home by the Grrrowl 8-1, the Checkers played much better Tuesday and earned a point in a 5-4 shootout loss in at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville.
Dusty Jamieson's second goal of the game with just 2:15 to play in the third period tied the game at 4-4. After a scoreless, five-minute sudden death overtime session, the Grrrowl edged the Checkers by outscoring Charlotte two to one through six rounds of the shootout.
Tim Sestito scored a pair of goals for Greenville while Brandon Cullen, and Kenton Smith had single tallies for the Checkers. Cullen also chipped in with a pair of assists Jeff Glass started for Charlotte, taking the shootout loss with 28 saves. Greenville goalie Mike Broduer earned the victory with 27 saves.
"I was really proud of the guys tonight," said Checkers coach Derek Wilkinson. "The effort was there tonight and I thought we played a full and talented Greenville team toe to toe in their building. I was more concerned with what our effort would be tonight, rather than if we won the game. Jeff Glass didn't play well the first two periods but made some big saves in the third to keep us in it"
Charlotte grabbed the lead in period one as Cullen's shot trickled in by Broduer at 8:41 for a 1-0 Checkers advantage. Greenville tied the game at 11:49 as Sestito knocked in a loose puck in the crease that Glass didn't see, and the two teams went to the locker room after 20 minutes tied at 1-1.
In the second period Greenville outscored Charlotte three goals to two and assumed a 4-3 lead through two periods. Smith and Jamieson tallied for the Checkers while Krys Barch, Sestito and Vladimir Gusev scored for the Grrrowl. In the final period the Grrrowl held the 4-3 lead until Jamieson's late tally sent the game to overtime.
The shootout loss gave Charlotte one point, and saw their record reach 14-11-3 for 31 points. The win improved Greenville's record to 15-9-1 for 31 points. The Checkers will continue their stretch of nine games in 13 days with a pair of games this weekend in Florida against Pensacola beginning, Friday night at 8:05 p.m. Eastern Time. Charlotte also plays the Ice Pilots on Saturday afternoon at 5:05 p.m. Eastern Time.
