Early Offense by Worcester Dooms Bisons on Sunday 8-1
August 1, 2021 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
The Buffalo Bisons could not recover from a pair of first-inning errors Sunday to drop the series finale against Worcester Red Sox 8-1 at Polar Park.
The Red Sox's jumped the Bisons early for three runs which came aided by a pair of uncharacteristic fielding errors.
On the second batter of the game, Dilson Herrera committed a throwing error to first base. Buffalo starter Zach Logue followed by surrendering a walk, a single and sacrifice fly to Jhonny Pereda to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.
Anthony Morales also committed a throwing error in the inning trying to field a bunt, and it allowed Worcester to plate another run.
The Bisons ultimately surrendered three runs in the inning after a Tate Matheny RBI double. All the runs went unearned to Logue.
Defensive miscues have been an abnormal occurrence for the Bisons who have committed just 39 all season, the second least in Triple-A East. Sunday, the Bisons committed three that resulted in four unearned runs
Logue pitched Sunday after having just made a four inning bulk relief appearance Wednesday and still managed to put together a decent line on just four days of rest. The lefty surrendered just two earned runs and six hits in the loss.
After falling behind early, Buffalo threatened throughout the game and but only scratched one run across coming the fifth. Tyler White laced his 15th double of the year down the left field to score Jeremy Rivera to cut into the lead, 5-1.
The Red Sox tacked on five more runs to keep Buffalo out of the game over the final eight innings.
Buffalo outhit the Red Sox 11-8 and created 10 opportunities with runners in scoring position, including loading the bases in the eighth inning. But the Herd's bats were held in check, striking out a combined nine times and leaving 21 runners on base. Red Sox starter John Schreiber was a big reason for the one-run performance from the Bisons, striking out four and allowing no runs over 3.2 innings.
White was the lone bright spot in the game starting off August the same way he finished July with an RBI and two hits. The first basemen collected 20 RBIs and hit seven home runs in July.
Buffalo lost the last three games of the series to drop the current series 4-2 and fall behind in the season series 10-8. It is the first series loss of the Bisons since their shortened five-game series against the Rochester Red Wings the second week in July.
The Herd (46-29) will travel to Leigh-Valley to take on the IronPigs Tuesday for a six-game set. The Bisons have dominated the IronPigs in 2021 leading the season series 9-2.
