Worcester Red Sox News Release

WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (41-35) closed out the homestand with a dominant offensive performance against the Buffalo Bisons (46-29), an 8-1 final in a series-sealing win at Polar Park on Sunday afternoon.

The WooSox jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first, taking advantage of two Buffalo errors. Jeremy Rivera reached first on a throwing error by Dilson Herrera, followed by a walk and a Josh Ockimey single. Jhonny Pereda hit a sac-fly to right field, bringing in Rivera for Pereda's first Triple-A RBI. A Tate Matheney double brought in Jeter Downs, and a fielding error by Tyler White allowed Michael Gettys to reach first, bringing Josh Ockimey home to score to put the home team up 3-0 after one.

Worcester took its offensive momentum into the second, as Ryan Fitzgerald doubled on a ground ball to right field. Yairo Muñoz extended his hitting streak to 24 games after hitting an RBI single to left field to score Fitzgerald and put the WooSox up 4-0. That knock marked Munoz' 24th straight game with a hit, one off Jacoby Ellsbury's Red Sox Triple-A record 25-game hit streak (2007).

After a scoreless third frame for both teams, Fitzgerald singled in the fourth to set up an RBI double from Jeremy Rivera and extend the WooSox lead to 5-0.

Despite giving up five hits, John Schreiber pitched a 3.2 scoreless innings and recorded four strikeouts on the day.

Buffalo got on the board in the fifth-an Anthony Morales single set up a line drive RBI double from Tyler White. Worcester matched the Bison's first run in the fifth when Josh Ockimey knocked solo home run to right.

The WooSox added on to their lead in the seventh, starting off with a Jeremy Rivera line drive single to left field. After Rivera advanced to second off a wild pitch and Jeter Downs walked, Downs stole second base. A throwing error by Anthony Morales, Buffalo's third error on the day, allowed Downs to advance to third and scored Rivera. Josh Ockimey walked, and sac-fly by Pereda brought Downs in to score.

Tate Matheny continued his defensive stunts in centerfield with a leaping catch in the eighth to save a Bisons home run for the second game in a row.

The WooSox are off Monday and begin a six-game series Monday on the road at 7:05 p.m. at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Radio coverage starts live at 6:45 p.m. on 100 FM The Pike and the WooSox Radio Network. Worcester's Kutter Crawford (0-1, 4.50) is the scheduled starter.
