Redbirds Drop Series Finale against the Stripers: August 1, 2021

August 1, 2021 - International League (IL)
Memphis Redbirds News Release

MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds lost the final game of their week-long series against the Gwinnett Stripers (Triple-A affiliate, Atlanta Braves) by a 4-2 final on Sunday afternoon. The Stripers took four of the six games in the series. Each game was decided by two runs or less, with Gwinnett scoring 28 runs in the series and Memphis scoring 25.

Jack Flaherty made his second rehab start of the week for Memphis (38-40) against Gwinnett (41-37) at AutoZone Park. After going two scoreless frames with three strikeouts on Tuesday, his outing on Sunday wasn't quite as stellar. Flaherty allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits, including a two-run triple by Johan Camargo in the first inning. Flaherty did finish his outing with five strikeouts, four of which were swinging strikeouts.

On the other side, Kyle Wright was brilliant once again for the Stripers. After tossing eight scoreless innings with five strikeouts on Tuesday, he was arguably better on Sunday afternoon. The righthander fanned 11 batters in 6.0 innings, including five strikeouts in a row between the second and third innings.

The only problem for Wright? Conner Capel was in the Memphis lineup on Sunday afternoon. The lefthanded hitter had his way against Wright, driving in Juan Yepez with an RBI triple in the first and tying the game with a solo home run in the fourth. Capel finished the game 2-4 at the plate and reached base 11 times in the six-game series.

The game remained knotted at two until the top of the ninth, when Gwinnett scratched across two runs on three hits to take a lead they would never relinquish. Camargo singled home another run in the ninth - he drove in nine runs in the series.

The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
