Colorado Eagles News Release
LOVELAND, Colo. -In Eagles forward Brock Nixon's first game back from injured reserve since February 21st, he came out strong scoring two goals to help the Colorado Eagles (32-25-7-5) defeat the Alaska Aces (44-18-3-4), 5-4, in a shootout on Wednesday evening at the Budweiser Events Center.
Eighteen seconds into the first period Aces forward Andy Taranto beat Eagles netminder Dustin Butler with a one-timer to give Alaska the early 1-0 lead. Nixon was the first to answer as he stuffed home a power-play goal from the top of the crease to tie the game at 1-1, 3:02 into the first. With less than five minutes left in the period, Eagles veteran forward Trent Daavettila poked the puck past Aces goalie Gerald Coleman to put the Eagles ahead of Alaska, 2-1.
Just under nine minutes into the second frame Eagles defenseman Mark Nemec caught a pass in the low slot to score his fifth goal of the year and put Colorado up 3-1 over the Aces. Alaska responded, just over one minute later, as forward Nick Mazzolini netted a goal from the right face-off circle to close the scoring gap 3-2.
Just over four minutes into the third stanza Nixon backhanded the puck past Coleman, five-hole, to score his second goal of the game and extend Colorado's lead to 4-2. Mazzolini scored his second goal of the game off of a pass from behind Butler's net to make it a one-goal game, 4-3, 11:37 into the third. Alaska managed to tie the game at 4-4 on a five-hole goal from forward Peter Sivak with less than two minutes left in regulation.
The Eagles and Aces headed into a sudden death, 4-on-4 overtime that remained scoreless and the two teams went into a shootout. Coleman allowed goals from Eagles forward Kyle Ostrow as well as Riley Nelson's game-winner. Butler turned aside seven of the eight shots thrown on him during the shootout to secure the Eagles 5-4 victory over the Aces.
